In September 2023, the actor, best known for his role as Steven Hyde in the sitcom, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for abusing two women. Masterson is serving his sentence at a medium-security prison in San Luis Obispo, California.
Now, it appears that Masterson’s legal team filed an appeal last Wednesday (December 18) against the actor’s conviction, according to documents obtained by Fox News Digital.
“The Opening Brief filed on December 18, 2024, demonstrates two fundamental flaws in Danny Masterson’s convictions,” said the actor’s lawyer in a statement, adding that “the trial was filled with erroneous legal rulings that distorted the jury’s view of the evidence against him.”
According to Masterson’s attorney, Cliff Gardner, “there was an overwhelming amount of exculpatory evidence that was never presented to the jury.”
“But the appeal is just one part of Danny’s challenge to his convictions. Danny’s habeas corpus attorney will follow up the opening brief with a Habeas Corpus Petition documenting additional defects in the trial process. Stay tuned as we work towards Danny’s full exoneration.”
Masterson is the father of Fianna, 10 years old, from his marriage to his ex-wife, Bijou Phillips, 44 years old. Phillips stood by Masterson during the trials and even during his sentencing, until she filed for divorce in September of the previous year.
